Jesus made a prediction so specific, so audacious, that his enemies memorized it.
They used it against him at his trial.
They threw it in his face while he was dying on the cross.

What Jesus Said
Early in his ministry, Jesus walked into the Temple in Jerusalem and drove out the merchants and money changers.
The religious leaders demanded he explain himself.
What sign could he show them to justify what he had just done?
He answered them with this:
“Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” John 2:19 (NIV)
The crowd laughed.
They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” John 2:20 (NIV)
They thought he was talking about the building in front of them.
But the temple he had spoken of was his body. John 2:21 (NIV)
He was not talking about stone and mortar.
Jesus was predicting his own death and resurrection.
In public.
In front of witnesses.
Early in his ministry, before anyone had reason to take him seriously.
His Enemies Preserved the Prediction
Here is what makes this remarkable.
Jesus did not need his followers to pass this statement down.
His enemies did it for him.
Years later, at his trial before the Sanhedrin, witnesses brought this exact statement forward as evidence against him:
“This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” Matthew 26:61 (NIV)
They twisted the wording slightly. Jesus had said “destroy this temple.” They changed it to “I am able to destroy.”
But the core of the prediction was still there. Still on record. Still being repeated by people who wanted him dead.
Then as He hung on the cross, bystanders hurled the same words back at him:
“You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” Matthew 27:40 (NIV)
They were mocking him.
They had no idea they were citing a prophecy that was about to be fulfilled.
What Happened Next
Three days later, the tomb was empty.
His own disciples did not understand the prediction when He made it.
After He was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what He had said.

The people who loved him did not get it until after.
The people who hated him repeated it without believing it.
And it happened exactly as He said.
Why This Matters
The resurrection of Jesus is the most scrutinized event in history.
Skeptics have proposed alternatives for two thousand years.
The disciples stole the body.
Jesus never died.
The tomb was in the wrong location.
But here is the problem with every alternative theory.
The religious leaders who had Jesus killed had every reason to produce a body.
One body ends Christianity on day one.
They never produced one.
Instead they bribed the guards to say the disciples stole it while they slept. Matthew 28:12-13.
Men who were asleep cannot identify who took something. That is not a credible counter-claim.
It is a cover story.
And it was a cover story for a tomb that was already empty.
What He Said About What Comes Next
Jesus who predicted his own death and resurrection down to the specific timeline, in public, years before it happened, then fulfilled it, is not finished making promises.
Jesus also said He was going away to prepare a place for us.
He also prayed the night before He died that he wanted us to be with him where he is.
He prayed for us before He died for us.
The same Jesus who said “destroy this temple and I will raise it in three days” is the same Jesus who said “I will come back and take you to be with me.”
The question is not whether He lied.
