Every major religion in the world has a book.
Every major religion has a founder who said wise things.
Every major religion has teachings worth reading.
But most of them have one thing in common.
Their founder is gone.
Their following is fading.
And the relationship between the follower and the founder ends at the page.
Then came Jesus.
What Jesus Said Before He Left
The night before His arrest, Jesus told His disciples something that confused them.
He said it was better for them that He go away.
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7 (NIV)
Better that He go away?
These men had walked with Him for 3 years.
They had watched Him heal the blind, raise the dead, and calm a storm.
How could His absence possibly be better than His presence?
Because when Jesus walked the earth in a physical body, He could only be in one place at one time.
When the Holy Spirit came, He could be in every believer simultaneously.
Everywhere. At all times. Inside every person who believes in Him.
That is not a lesser presence.
That is a greater one.
What the Holy Spirit Does
For someone who has never grown up in church or has heard the term Holy Spirit without understanding it, here is the simplest way to think about it.
The Holy Spirit is God living inside you after you choose to believe.
He is not religious enthusiasm.
He is real and active, specific, and personal.
Jesus described what He does:
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13 (NIV)
He guides.
He convicts.
He comforts.
He intercedes.
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Romans 8:26 (NIV)
When you do not know what to pray, He prays for you.
When you feel too broken to form words, He carries them to the Father anyway.
And the fruit He produces in the lives of people He indwells is not self-generated.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)
What Makes the Bible Different From Every Other Religious Book
Buddhism has the Tripitaka.
Taoism has the Tao Te Ching.
Islam has the Quran.
Each of these contains wisdom, philosophy, and moral teaching.
But none of them make the claim that the Bible makes about itself.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
Alive and active.
Not was alive.
Not contains timeless wisdom.
Is alive. Present tense. Right now.
No other religious text in the world describes itself that way.
The Tao Te Ching is a philosophy book. It can change your perspective. It can give you a framework for living.
But it is one-sided.
The Quran is a sacred text to over a billion people. It contains moral teaching and religious law. But Islam does not teach that God moves inside the believer through an indwelling Spirit. Allah in Islam is transcendent and unknowable personally. The relationship is submission to commands from a distance.
One-sided.
The God of the Bible does not stand at a distance and issue commands.
He is alive. He is in every believer. He can be felt daily.
The Bible is reciprocal.
You bring yourself to it and it meets you where you are.
You speak to God through prayer and His Spirit speaks back to your spirit.
That is what Hebrews 4:12 means when it says the word of God is alive and active and judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
It is not a one way transaction.
It is a conversation with a God who is present, listening, and responding.
No philosophy book does that.
No ancient text does that.
Only a living word backed by a living God can do that.
What Jesus Said That Settles It
Jesus did not leave His followers with a philosophy.
He left them with a Person.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth.” John 14:16 (NIV)
Forever.
Not for a generation. Not until the movement fades.
Forever.
The same Spirit that filled that upper room at Pentecost and transformed 11 frightened men into the founders of the largest movement in human history is available to every person who comes to Jesus today.
Not words on a page.
Not a distant God issuing commands.
Not a philosophy to intellectually agree with.
A living presence that moves in, stays, intercedes, guides, convicts, comforts, and testifies to your spirit that you are known and loved by the God who made you.
That is what Jesus promised.
This Is Not a One-Sided Relationship
Every other belief system asks something of you and gives you silence in return.
Jesus does not work that way.
He is alive.
He is present.
And He can be felt every single day by everyone who comes to Him and believes.
You do not earn any of that.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
Grace.
Faith.
Gift.
Not a one-sided transaction where you give everything and receive silence in return.
A relationship with a God who is alive, who can be felt, and who loved you enough to die for you before you ever took a single step toward Him.
That is what Jesus offers.
Not just words that are alive on paper.
Himself, with you. Every day.
